Dr Sonia Warner is a seasoned governance and institutional development expert with over 35 years of experience in the UK Civil Service, followed by a successful career as an independent consultant. She has lived and worked across a wide range of countries, including Fiji, Belize, Sudan, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Ghana, and Nigeria, where she has built and sustained extensive professional and personal networks.
She is widely recognised for her deep commitment to social justice. In 2025, she completed a Doctorate at the African Leadership Centre, King’s College London, where her research focused on leadership and policing in South-West Nigeria. Her doctoral thesis includes case studies on the #EndSARS movement, Operation Amotekun, and the Police Act (2020), contributing valuable academic and policy insights into security sector governance and reform.
Dr Warner is also known for her landmark Employment Tribunal victory in 2021 against her former employer, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The Tribunal found that she had been directly discriminated against on the basis of race, in breach of the Equality Act (2010). The case exposed systemic weaknesses in disciplinary processes and institutional bias, and has since encouraged others facing similar injustices to challenge discrimination and unfair treatment in the workplace.
She does not simply advocate for social justice in theory; she actively embodies it in practice. Dr Warner’s career reflects a rare and powerful blend of policy and technical expertise, lived experience, advocacy, and rigorous academic inquiry.
This blog, which began in 2019, shares reflections from her life journey alongside commentary on topical issues. The views expressed are her own.
